Applying for positions as a law student can feel daunting, especially when it comes to securing that coveted traineeship at the Bar. How do you make sure your cover letter doesn’t end up in the bin, and how can you truly stand out in an interview? With job fairs just around the corner, here are some practical tips to help you in your search.
1. Build a strong profile before you start applying
Your CV is your foundation. Be clear about your interests and highlight relevant experience. Quality counts more than quantity: a handful of meaningful internships or projects that demonstrate your skills is far more convincing than a long list of everything you’ve done.
A professional photo also matters. Too many students still use holiday snapshots, which look unprofessional. You don’t need a studio shoot – a clear photo with a neutral background works perfectly well.
Once your CV is ready, focus on your cover letter. This is your chance to show personality and highlight what isn’t in your CV. Tools like ChatGPT can help check spelling and readability, but avoid letting AI write the letter for you – recruiters can spot generic text immediately. Don’t simply repeat your CV. Instead, explain who you are, what motivates you to join a particular firm, and why you want to practise law. Law firms care deeply about precision, so strong writing and flawless grammar are essential.
Firms will also look at your track record: completing your degree without resits, relevant summer internships, strong grades in your chosen field, an impressive dissertation, postgraduate study, and solid language skills (fluent Dutch, French, and English). Just as important are your attitude, cultural fit, drafting ability, analytical skills, and whether you work well in a team.
2. Do your research and double-check everything
Preparation sets you apart. Know who the partners are, what the firm is known for, and how it positions itself in the market. If you can explain in your letter or interview why you want to join that specific firm, you’ll show genuine motivation and care.
Always double-check your documents. Few things are more awkward than mentioning the wrong firm’s name. Also make sure you’re addressing the right person. To avoid mistakes, read your letter out loud or ask someone else to review it.
3. Use internships to gain insight and experience
Summer internships are the best way to explore different areas of law and discover what truly interests you. Some firms offer rotations across departments, which I highly recommend. Later, you’ll be able to explain with confidence which practice areas attract you most and why. Firms value this kind of reflection, as it shows you’ve thought carefully about your career path.
Workshops, information sessions and networking events are also valuable opportunities. They help you get to know the profession, build contacts, and show initiative.
4. Present yourself professionally
This is simple: overdressed is better than underdressed. You don’t need a three-piece suit, but a neat, professional appearance shows respect for the firm and for the opportunity. If the culture turns out to be more informal, you can adjust later.
5. A golden tip
